Take Your Time, Think Over Your Answers As If Your Future Depends On It. Somehow It Does!

I love what Jesus did when the Pharisees and the Herodians brought him the issue of paying of tax to the emperor, whether it is right or wrong. Jesus told them to bring him a coin. As they went about looking for the coin, I assume Jesus used that time to think of the best answer. When they brought him a coin, he asked them, ‘Whose head is it?’ They answered, ‘Ceaser’s.’ Then he told them, ‘Give to Ceaser what belongs to Ceaser and God what belongs to God.’ ((Matthew 22:15-22)

In another case, when they brought him the woman caught in adultery, ‘Teacher, they said to Jesus, ‘this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. In our law, Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?’ Jesus thought about the question and sensed a trap, they only asked him that question to trap him, not to be enlightened. He took his time time and weighed the options. He bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger. When they disturbed him the more with the question, he straightened himself and threw them the most humiliating question, ‘Whichever one of you has committed no sin, let him cast the first stone.’ He bent over and continued writing on the ground. They all walked away, one by one with the older ones first. He then told the woman to never sin again. ( Good News Translation John 8:1-11 )

Do not be quick to answer, take your time, think over the question. Weigh the implications of your answer. Sometimes, they don’t ask the question to know or to be enlightened but to ‘catch’ you and implicate you.

  1. Hi Florence
I, more often than not, fall into these traps. I act first and then regret later, unfortunately!

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing wisdom.
